Mohammad Ali Jauhar University (Hindi: मोहम्मद अली जौहर विश्वविद्यालय; Urdu: محمد علی جوہر یونیورسٹی) is a private university established in 2006 by the Mohammad Ali Jauhar Trust in Rampur, Uttar Pradesh, recognised by University Grants Commission (UGC). Its Chancellor is Samajwadi Party Cabinet minister Azam Khan. It was granted university status in 2012 by the Uttar Pradesh government. It was granted minority status by National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions (NCMEI) on 28 May 2013.
The University campus is located at a distance of approximately 6.0 km. from the city of Rampur. If you proceed from the city of Rampur; it falls on the left side of the road leading to Tanda, conversely if you come from Moradabad via Tanda, it falls on the right along the Kosi River, which forms its natural boundary. Kosi River flows all along the university for distance of two and a half miles.
In the year 2004 it was proposed as a State Owned Urdu university to be set up in Rampur, Uttar Pradesh and was named after Mohammad Ali Jouhar an Indian Muslim leader and who was among the leading figures of the Khilafat Movement. The main originator of the idea of a Urdu university was Azam Khan. It would have been the first State Owned Urdu university in whole of Uttar Pradesh. At that time, proposal of making Azam Khan as lifelong Chancellor of University was not approved by the then Governor TV Rajeshwar. The Center Government then controlled by the Congress also opposed the Bill for a Urdu University Stating that it would have approved of the bill if Azam Khan then MLA of Samajwadi Party would stop wanting to be the lifelong chancellor of the university. Azam Khan was unmovable on his conditions to become the lifelong chancellor of the university. Hence the first state owned Urdu university was further put on hold.
