Md. Akhtaruzzaman is a Bangladeshi academic who is the current and the 28th vice-chancellor of the University of Dhaka. Prior to the position, he had been serving as the pro-Vice Chancellor (admin) of the university.
Akhtaruzzaman's ancestors are from Patharghata in Barguna. He stood first in both BA (honours) and masters in the islamic history and culture from the University of Dhaka. He completed a post-graduate diploma in Persian language. He earned his PhD degree in history from Aligarh Muslim University. He was a Fulbright Scholar at Boston College in the United States and British Council Visiting Scholar at the University of Birmingham, England.
In 1990, Akhtaruzzaman joined as a lecturer at the Department of Islamic History and Culture of the University of Dhaka. He went on to become a professor in 2004. He served as the chairman of the department from 2008 to 2011 and the dean of Arts Faculty from 2014 to 2016 and of the Arabic department in 2015.
Akhtaruzzaman was elected general secretary of the Dhaka University Teachers' Association (DUTA) for three consecutive years since 2004, and vice-president in 2009 and 2011 from the teachers' Blue Panel. The previous vice-chancellor of the university AAMS Arefin Siddique was the president of the same association at the time.
Akhtaruzzaman has published 42 research articles in journals and edited books. He wrote the five following books.
