Republican candidate Tim Pawlenty defeated Democratic candidate Roger Moe and Independence Party of Minnesota candidate Tim Penny. Due to a state economy in recession and underwater approval ratings, Incumbent Independence Party Governor Jesse Ventura chose not to seek reelection.
