James Michael "Mike" Johnson (born January 30, 1972) is an American politician and constitutional attorney from Benton, Louisiana who serves as the U.S. Representative for Louisiana's 4th congressional district in the northwestern portion of his state.
From 2015 to January 2017, he represented District 8 in Bossier Parish in the Louisiana House of Representatives. He ran unopposed in the special election called for February 21, 2015 to select a successor to Jeff R. Thompson, a Republican who resigned the legislative seat to become a judge of the Louisiana 26th Judicial District Court for Bossier and Webster parishes. The election was cancelled when only Johnson filed for the seat. He was re-elected in the September 10, 2015 election, again running unopposed.
On February 10, 2016, Johnson announced his candidacy for the 4th congressional district seat held for eight years by his fellow Republican, John C. Fleming, a physician and businessman from Minden, who instead ran unsuccessfully for the United States Senate for the seat vacated by Republican David Vitter.
Johnson was born in Shreveport, the oldest of four children of Jeanne Johnson and James Patrick Johnson (1953-2016), a firefighter who was critically burned and disabled in the line of duty. Patrick Johnson, as he was known, died of cancer two days before his son's election to Congress. In 1984, Patrick Johnson was burned and rendered permanently disabled in the fire which swept through Dixie Cold Storage. Lost in the tragedy was his colleague and friend, Captain Percy R. Johnson. Patrick Johnson is the inspiration of the book, Up from the Ashes. By 1985, Patrick Johnson had overcome a 5 percent chance to survive and founded the nonprofit organization, the Percy R. Johnson Burn Foundation, which over the years has helped more than fifteen thousand burn patients. Another of his organizations, PM Hazmat, Inc., provides safety and emergency training for industries, governments, and public safety entities.
