Michael Senych


Michael Senych (born September 24, 1926 - Corbin, British Columbia died March 27, 2002 Thorhild, Alberta) was a teacher and politician on both the provincial and municipal level from Alberta, Canada. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1963 to 1971.

Michael Senych was born on September 24, 1926 in Corbin, British Columbia, Canada. He attended post secondary education at the University of Alberta. After graduating from University he spent twenty-six years as a teacher before jumping into provincial politics.

Senych ran as a candidate for Social Credit in the 1963 Alberta general election. He was elected to the Alberta Legislature winning the Redwater electoral district. Senych ran for a second term in office in the 1967 Alberta general election. He won a closely contested race finishing almost 300 votes ahead of Progressive Conservative candidate Basil Zailo. Redwater was abolished due to redistribution in 1971, he ran for a third term in office in the new Redwater-Andrew electoral district in the 1971 Alberta general election. He was defeated by George Topolnisky who won a comfortable margin. He spent both his terms in office as a private member in the Social Credit government.

Senych would attempt to regain his seat running as an Independent in the 1982 Alberta general election. He was defeated by Topolnisky again finishing fourth out of fifth place. He attempted one more try running under the Representative banner in the 1986 Alberta general election. He increased his popular vote over his 1982 results but still finished a distant third to Progressive Conservative candidate Steve Zarusky.
