Michael McDermott is an American politician. He was the Libertarian Party candidate for Governor of New York state, in the election of 2014, losing to Andrew Cuomo and falling very short of the 50,000 votes needed to maintain ballot access. The libertarian ticket dropped by 0.63% of all voters from the previous year and received less than a third of the votes from the last cycle despite being included in the only gubernatorial debate of 2014.

According to his website, McDermott worked as a real estate broker and developer from 2001 to 2008. As of 2016, he is the vice chair of the Libertarian party of Suffolk County.

In 2012, McDermott was the Libertarian candidate who sought election to the U.S. House to represent the 3rd Congressional District of New York. He was defeated by Democrat Steve Israel on November 6, 2012.

In 2014, McDermott was the Libertarian nominee for governor of New York.

In 2016, McDermott ran for a seat in Congress representing New York's 3rd congressional district, in a race to replace Steve Israel, who decided to retire. He failed to make it onto the ballot, forcing him to be a write-in candidate.
