Mellassine

Mellassine (Arabic: الملاسين) is a poor district of Tunis located in the north-western suburbs, containing 6,210 inhabitants in 2004 and attached to the Tunis Governorate.
This area takes its name from the activity of manufacturers of clay braziers.
It is since 1940s that the eastern shore of Sebkha Sejoumi has welcomed the first rural migrants. Factors that triggered this installation are the proximity of the medina and the legal status of the lands most of which are attached to the habous.
