On the junior tour, Purcell has a career high ITF junior ranking of 4 achieved in January 2015. He reached the quarterfinals of the 2016 Australian Open boys' singles event and the semifinals of the boys' doubles event.
In March 2016, Purcell won the prestigious North Shore Open at his home base at the Northern Suburbs Tennis Association in Naremburn Sydney. He grabbed the first prize of $3200 by defeating Jake Delaney in the final.
