Mawewe, or Maueva, was king of the Gaza Empire in modern Mozambique, who governed from 1858–1864. He succeeded his father, Manicusse, but was deposed by his brother Mzila with the support of the Portuguese, in a civil war which began in 1861 and ended in 1864.
Mawewe later found his way to Zimbabwe serima area and died there after 1930. He called himself Chigara to fit in with the Shona people. his children now use the name Mahwehwe instead of Mawewe.
