Mats Helgesson is a Swedish Air Force major general. He was appointed Chief of Air Force in October 2015.
Helgesson was born and raised in Gothenburg. He began his military career as a reserve officer at Norrland Dragoon Regiment in Arvidsjaur in the early 1980s. He served as squaron commander at the F 7 Såtenäs before being appointed commanding officer of F 17 Kallinge in 2009. Helgesson served in this position until 2012 when he was appointed as head of J 0 at the Swedish Joint Force Command's (Insatsstaben) Development Department at the Swedish Armed Forces Headquarters. He was then appointed head of Test and Evaluation (T&E) at the Defence Materiel Administration in 2013. Helgesson was appointed Chief of Air Force and was promoted to major general on 17 September 2015 and took office on 1 October 2015.
Helgesson has two children.
