In 1997, armored car driver David Scott Ghantt (Galifianakis) working at Loomis Fargo & Company — which was previously robbed of about $18 million in the same year by the company's security guard Phillip Johnson, the largest heist in US history — with his co-worker Kelly Campbell (Wiig), who was then fired by their boss for not moving the truck. After three weeks, Kelly is staying with Steve Eugene Chambers (Wilson) — her childhood friend, who lives with his wife Michelle (Ellis), their two children, as well as two friends. Upon watching the news about the robbery, Steve gets an idea to rob Loomis. He persuades Kelly into getting David in on the plan and uses a code name "Geppetto" upon meeting with David.
David agrees to the plan, in order to avoid marrying Jandice (McKinnon), who was engaged to David's distant cousin before his death. After some awkward training in preparation of the robbery, the team makes David go inside the company's vault and load the entire money from the vault into the company's van. Before he can escape, David takes out three CCTV tapes but he misses one of the tapes. The next day, David flees to Mexico with $20,000 and takes the cover name "Michael McKinney", who was actually a real person and Steve's friend, while Steve took a large sum of the heist which is around $17 million. However, FBI Special Agent Scanlon (Jones) and her partner (Daly) subsequently took the case and since David is now on the FBI wanted list, Steve plans to cut David loose but Kelly thinks it would be wrong to abandon David.
