Martinsburg was founded in 1828 when the nearby rival towns of Hanover and Williamsburg merged.

The racial makeup of the village was 93.7% White, 1.7% African American, 1.3% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 2.5% from two or more races.
