Mark Barrott

Mark Barrott (born 1968) is an English DJ and record producer.

Barrott was raised in Sheffield, a traditional industrial city in the north of England. He took piano lessons from a very young age and later in life came to realise that Sheffield was a good place to grow up in the 70s and 80s. Barrott has cited the sense of local community, the surrounding countryside and the burgeoning music scene as positive influences on his career. When Barrott was thirteen years of age in 1981, he began playing synthesizers in groups, motivated by watching a Sheffield City Hall live show of the band Kraftwerk that was part of their Computer World tour. Local electronic band The Human League was another influence on Barrott's early synthesizer career.

Barrott spent most of his teenage years playing in bands but became frustrated with the lack of focus and discipline of fellow band mates. He felt too much time was spent talking about music and not enough time making it and had already decided that he wanted a full-time career in music.

1988 saw the emergence of acid house in the UK, which Barrott described as his “own punk”. Barrott would attend The Leadmill on Friday nights where he would hear sets from acid house pioneers such as Graeme Park, and on Saturday night he would attend Occasions, witnessing the eclectic selections of DJ Parrot and Winston Hazel. This nightlife, combined with the proximity of Warp Records and increasingly affordable electronic instrumentation, inspired Barrott to build his own studio and produce his own music. He had also become increasingly drawn towards the chill out rooms in the venues he’d frequent and soon became immersed in the ambient scene, taking inspiration from The Orb, KLF and the DJ Mixmaster Morris
