Marion County is a county located in the U.S. state of South Carolina. As of the 2010 census, its population was 33,062. Its county seat is Marion. The county was created in 1785 and was originally known as Liberty County. However, four years later it was renamed Marion County, in honor Brigadier General Francis Marion, the famous "Swamp Fox" and a hero of the American Revolutionary War.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 494 square miles (1,280 km2), of which 489 square miles (1,270 km2) is land and 4.9 square miles (13 km2) (1.0%) is water.

As of the census of 2000, there were 35,466 people, 13,301 households, and 9,510 families residing in the county. The population density was 72 people per square mile (28/km²). There were 15,143 housing units at an average density of 31 per square mile (12/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 41.69% White, 56.35% Black or African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.28% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.90% from other races, and 0.52% from two or more races. 1.79% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
