Marine environmental issues in Lebanon

A variety of factors affect the water and coastline of Lebanon, including marine pollution and the environmental impact of shipping. A list of such factors includes oil spills, noxious liquid substances spills, sewage spills, and the dumping of radioactive and medical waste.

In Lebanon, marine conservation, marine pollution response, and implementation of the international maritime conventions such as the international convention for the prevention of pollution from ships are the concern of the Lebanese navy, since it is the only state authority that can enforce the maritime law in both Lebanese exclusive economic zone and territorial waters.
For the reason that:

Lebanese Navy undergoes difficulties in accomplishing its enduring roles in maritime safety, security and marine environment stewardship.

Currently the cooperation between UNIFIL Maritime Task Force and Lebanese Navy is limited to the security issues, and does not include the ecological issues affecting Lebanon. Some of the UNIFIL warships do not comply the MARPOL Annex VI which regulate the air pollution being emitted by ships.

The Jiyeh power station oil spill is an environmental disaster happened during the 2006 Lebanon war and is compared to the scale of the Exxon Valdez spill. Lebanese people claimed their suffering from this disaster (The slick increased the risk of cancer and other disease, killed fish and other marine resources...) and unlike the Deepwater Horizon 20,000,000,000 $ Trust, Lebanese people were not honored and did not receive any compensation. There have been long-term effects on Lebanese people from this oil spill.
