Marcio "Macarrão" Stambowsky is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu coral belt (7th degree), who is one of the "Famous Five" to have been graded as a black belt by Rolls Gracie. Stambowsky, who was one of the top competitors in the 1980s, is also the father of a prolific grappling competitor, Neiman Gracie Stambowsky. Rickson Gracie named Marcio Macarrão as one of the original BJJ competitors to use the triangle choke.
During the formative years of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Stambowsky was notable for revolutionizing the closed guard, triangles, and leg locks. He shared the mat daily with future leaders of the sport, such as Romero Cavalcanti, Fabio Santos, Rickson Gracie and Royler Gracie. Stambowsky's teacher also shared the building with Carlson Gracie and his team.
In 1980, Stambowsky was selected to join an elite group of top fighters that the Gracies had intended to take to the Olympic Games in Moscow and the Sambo Pan American Championship in the United States. Although the team never made it to the Olympics, Stambowski went on to win two gold medals and one bronze in national competitions from 1981 to 1985.
Keeping a close contact with the Gracie family, Stambowsky eventually married Carla Gracie, daughter of Robson Gracie. In addition to his son Neiman, Stambosky has one daughter, Deborah Gracie Stambowsky. Stambowsky moved his family from Brazil to the United States in 2007. He is the founder of Gracie Sports USA and Team Macarra BJJ, based in Norwalk, Connecticut.
