Rajputana State Railway extended the 1,000 mm (3 ft 3 3⁄8 in) wide metre gauge Delhi-Ajmer line to Ahmedabad in 1881. The Khodiyar-Mahesana sector was converted to 1,676 mm (5 ft 6 in) wide broad gauge in 1995 and the Mahesana-Palanpur section was converted in 1997, which along with the conversion of the Ajmer-Palanpur section, completed the conversion of the entire Jaipur-Ahmedabad line.Viramgam-Mahesana section was re-opened in 2005, after gauge conversion from 1,000 mm (3 ft 3 3⁄8 in) wide metre gauge to 1,676 mm (5 ft 6 in) wide broad gauge.
