MV Coastal Inspiration is the second of three Coastal-class ships delivered to BC Ferries. Amenities include a Coastal Cafe, Coast Cafe Express, Passages gift shop, coffee bar, SeaWest Lounge, Kid Zone play areas, arcade, business work stations, a conference room, and staterooms. Coastal Inspiration (along with sister ship Coastal Renaissance) are equipped with 'future galleys' which at this point in time are little more than empty rooms. At some point in the future, BC Ferries may elect to outfit this space as a complete galley and open a buffet-style restaurant (a service currently available on the two Spirit-class vessels). The third Coastal-class vessel, Coastal Celebration is fitted with the full buffet and this second galley.
Due to the Coastal-class vessel's ability to carry a large quantity of overheight vehicles, BC Ferries decided to operate Coastal Inspiration on the Duke Point-Tsawwassen route.
Coastal Inspiration was launched on August 31, 2007 and departed Flensburg on February 9, 2008, transited the Panama Canal on March 7, 2008, and arrived in Nanaimo, British Columbia at Departure Bay on March 25, 2008.
Coastal Inspiration began regular service on June 16, 2008, the vessel having made unscheduled training runs during the week leading up to this date.
On December 20, 2011, Coastal Inspiration experienced a hard landing upon arrival at Duke Point terminal. The terminal berth sustained significant damage and the vessel's port side doors were also damaged. The terminal required extensive repairs and its closure rerouted all service through Departure Bay. Repairs to the ship were completed in January 2012, and the terminal reopened in May 2012
