M.A.C. Farrant


M.A.C. Farrant (Marion Alice Coburn Farrant) (born April 5, 1947) is a Canadian short fiction writer, memoirist, journalist, and humourist.

M.A.C. Farrant is the author of fourteen works of fiction, non-fiction, memoir, and over one hundred book reviews and essays for the Vancouver Sun and the Toronto Globe & Mail. . Her memoir, My Turquoise Years, which she adapted for the stage, premiered April 4- May 4, 2013 at the Arts Club Theatre’s Granville Island Stage in Vancouver, British Columbia. Her novel, The Strange Truth About Us – A Novel of Absence, which the Globe & Mail hailed as “Delightful and disturbing in all the best ways, this book addresses that which mostly remains unspoken in ways that have seldom been spoken before”, was chosen by The Globe & Mail as a Best Book of 2012. The World Afloat – Miniatures, a collection of very short fiction, was published by Talonbooks in the spring of 2014 and won the City of Victoria Book Butler Book Prize for that year.. An exemplary review in the Spring 2014 issue of BC Bookword (circa 100,000) had this to say about the collection: “The miniatures of The World Afloat are as wild as colourful birthday helium balloons released into a hurricane; small points of cheerful light whirled in a dark and violent wind … Like poems, or recalled fragments of dreams, these kinds of stories are meant to resonate, rather than reveal, to stir up the mental sludge, flush out the septic tank of the subconscious, to make us feel more truly aware and alive.” – John Moore, BC Bookworld A new fiction collection, “The Days – Forecasts, Warnings, Advice’, was published by Talon in the Fall of 2016, was a finalist for the City of Victoria Butler Book Prize for 2017. A full-time writer currently residing in North Saanich, B.C., Farrant’s work as been nominated for or won many awards including, The Commonwealth Writers Prize, the Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize, The Van City Book Prize, the National Magazine Awards, the Gemini Awards for the Bravo short film adaptation of her story, Rob’s Guns & Ammo, the Victoria Book Prize (three times), and two Jessie Richardson Theatre Awards for her play My Turquoise Years, among others. She has taught writing at the University of Victoria, the Victoria School of Writing, the Banff Centre for the Arts, and was Writer-In-Residence at Macquarie University, Sydney Australia.
