Luni is located in Central Rajasthan on the banks of the Luni River. Luni is nearby to the villages of Shikarpura, Satlana, French, and Barliya. The nearest city is the District capital of Jodhpur. The little charming village of Luni is situated at a distance of 35 km from Jodhpur. The artisans inhabiting the village are still pursuing their ancestral profession of fashioning metal, clay or wood into intricate forms. En-route to Pali, 30 km south of Jodhpur, along the banks of the River Luni, is the hamlet of Chanwa. Granted as Jaagir, or a principality, in the late 19th century to Kaviraj Muraridanji, who built Fort Chanwa, the land reverted back to Jodhpur, only to be subsequently granted as a jagir to Dalip Singhji, the younger son of Maharaja Umaid Singh. Post-Independence, the fort fell into disarray. It was only in the early 1990s that extensive renovation and restoration were carried out, and Fort Chanwa became a heritage hotel.
Most people in Luni speak Hindi, but there are a number of Rajasthani speakers as well.
During the summer, the temperature can go as high as 44 degrees Celsius. In the winter, it can range from 15 degrees to 25 degrees.
Fort Chanwa The foundation of Fort Chanwa was laid over a hundred years ago during the rule of Maharaja Dalip Singh. The fort was fashioned out of red sandstone of Jodhpur city of Rajasthan. Its finely manicured gardens, exquisitely carved lattice work friezes and beautiful Jharokas or balconies are its striking features. The regal aura of the guest rooms makes the stay of guests completely royal. The restaurant of the heritage hotel Fort Chanwa serves mouth-watering traditional cuisine of Rajasthan in a perfect ambiance with musicians playing in the background.
