Loxodes is a genus of karyorelict ciliates, belonging to family Loxodidae. Whereas Loxodes is a limnic taxon, Remanella – the other loxodid genus – is marine.
The term Loxodes derives from the ancient greek (loksós), meaning "oblique, tilted".
Loxodes, and the other ciliate Paramecium, use gravity as a stimulus in their environment for spatial orientation (gravitaxis or geotaxis) and for controlling the velocity of their swim.
