North Dakota was admitted to the Union on November 2, 1889, and elects senators to Class 1 and Class 3. Its current Senators are Republican John Hoeven and Democrat Heidi Heitkamp.

Class 1 U.S. Senators belong to the electoral cycle that has recently been contested in 1994, 2000, 2006, and 2012. The next election will be in 2018.
Class 3
Class 3 U.S. Senators belong to the electoral cycle that has recently been contested in 1998, 2004, and 2010, and 2016. The next election will be in 2022.

As of October 2016[update], there are four former Senators who are living: one from Class 1, two from Class 3, and one who has belonged to both classes. The most recent senator to die was Quentin N. Burdick of Class 1 (1960-1992), who died in office on September 8, 1992. The most recent Class 3 senator to die was Milton Young (1945-1981) on May 31, 1983.
