The Ocean has known many different line-ups since its inception in 2000, and until 2007 was known as The Ocean Collective as it featured a revolving cast of members and (long-time) collaborators, centered on guitarist and composer Robin Staps. The band then dropped the 'Collective' part of their name in 2008 and went for a more traditional line-up, featuring vocalist Mike Pilat, guitarist Jonathan Nido, bassist Louis Jucker and drummer Luc Hess in addition to Staps. In 2009, Pilat left the band and was replaced by Loïc Rossetti, and this was the most stable line-up in The Ocean's history until the departure of Nido and Hess and the temporary hiatus of Jucker. Currently the band consists of Staps and Rossetti, along with Mattias Hägerstrand on bass and Paul Seidel on drums.
