Light metal is a term used to describe hard rock bands whose stylistic roots lie in heavy metal, but have a significantly softer sound than what would normally be classified as heavy metal. The subgenre has strong roots in psychedelic rock, and is often described as falling between heavy metal and hard rock. Notable groups sometimes classified as light metal include Blue Öyster Cult,Rush,Foghat,Nazareth, and Ghost.
