2017 Copa MX Femenil |
The Primera División Femenil de México, primarily referred to as the Liga MX Femenil, is the highest division of women's football in Mexico. It is supervised by the Mexican Football Federation and is made up by the female representatives of the 16 clubs of 18 Liga MX teams. The inaugural season is scheduled to commence in September 2017. Liga MX CEO Enrique Bonilla stated the league was created in order to nurture the stars of the Mexico women's national football team.
In December 2016, during a general assembly meeting with all Liga MX club owners in the new Mexican Football Federation headquarters, Liga MX CEO Enrique Bonilla announced the formation of the new Liga MX Femenil. 16 Liga MX clubs (excluding Puebla and Chiapas due to financial problems) will field an U-23 roster with four U-17 players and up to two overage players. There will not be any foreign players allowed at first, although Mexican-American dual national players will be allowed.
Although the inaugural season is until September, it was announced the teams will participate in a domestic cup called Copa MX Femenil in May 2017. The tournament took place between 3 May and 6 May 2017 with only 12 of the 16 teams participating due to four not having a team ready.
