Licking is located at 37°29′48″N 91°51′27″W / 37.49667°N 91.85750°W (37.496775, -91.857629). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.14 square miles (5.54 km2), of which, 2.13 square miles (5.52 km2) is land and 0.01 square miles (0.03 km2) is water.
The community was named for a mineral lick near the original town site. An early variant name was "Buffalo Lick".
As of the census of 2010, there were 3,124 people, 634 households, and 397 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,466.7 inhabitants per square mile (566.3/km2). There were 742 housing units at an average density of 348.4 per square mile (134.5/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 73.1% White, 25.6% African American, 0.6% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% from other races, and 0.4% from two or more races.
