Laviai Nielsen (born 13 March 1996) is a British sprinter. She competed in the women's 400 metres at the 2017 European Athletics Indoor Championships, finishing in fourth place in the final.
Nielsen grew up in Leytonstone, East London and was initially a middle distance runner. Laviai was a bag carrier for British heptathlete Jessica Ennis at the 2012 London Olympic games. Nielsen has an identical twin sister, Lina Nielsen, who is also an international athlete in the same events.
She is currently (2017) taking a year out from her Geography degree course at King's College London.
In 2013 the Nielsen twins were approached at an event and persuaded to change specialism to the 400 metres. Laviai reduced her personal best time by 2 seconds within 2 months and a further four seconds by the following season.
She won the gold medal in the 400 metres at the 2015 European Junior Championships in Sweden. She also ran the final leg with the winning 4 x 400 metres relay team, with her sister Lina running the second leg. Laviai was ranked number 2 in the UK at the end of the season.
In September 2015 Nielsen was awarded a place on the Jaguar Land Rover Academy of Sport programme, offering financial support and mentoring.
She reached the final of the 400 metres at the 2017 European Indoor Championships in Belgrade, finishing fourth and missing out on the bronze medal by 0.27 of a second. On the final day she ran the anchor leg of the 4 x 400 metre relay, winning the silver medal behind a strong Polish team.
