La Malquerida tells the story of Acacia Rivas, a girl whose father, Alonso, is killed in an avalanche caused intentionally by a man whom he trusted. When Acacia's mother, Cristina, finds love again after being widowed for only a year, Acacia is enraged, and after two years she decides to leave the family ranch to live with her grandparents. She returns eight years later, now a stunningly beautiful young woman, and without realizing it, she awakens in Esteban, her stepfather, a deep and passionate desire.
Acacia meets Ulises, and the two begin a romance. Esteban begins to feel deep jealousy of their relationship and does everything he can to keep Acacia and Ulises apart during their frequent breakups, though Acacia and Ulises always end up getting back together. Ulises spends time away from Acacia because of his work, and when she sees him in the company of an attractive real estate agent, she is terribly hurt. Acacia seeks comfort in Esteban and becomes increasingly confused when her childhood affection for him becomes a romantic attraction.
