López family of Iloilo

The López family of Iloílo are a wealthy and influential dynasty of business owners, politicians, and philanthropists in the Philippines.

The family trace their lineage to Basílio López (c.1800-c.1875), a Chinese mestizo merchant who adopted the López surname and became gobernadorcillo of Jaro, Iloilo City in 1849. López married Sabina Jalandoni and they had sixteen children. Later generations intermarried with other mestizo families (of mixed Spanish, Austronesian and Chinese ancestry).

The most prominent members of the family were the brothers Eugenio López, Sr. (1901-1975) and Fernando López, Sr. (1904-1993), great-grandsons of Basilio López. Eugenio's business interests are now known as the Lopez Group of Companies. It includes the media conglomerate ABS-CBN Corporation and First Philippine Holdings Corporation. Fernando served as Vice President of the Philippines under Presidents Elpidio Quirino and Ferdinand Marcos.
