In the Camargue a local young playboy named Frédéri (Jourdan) falls in love with a young woman from Arles. However, he mustn't marry her because his family considers her unworthy since she once had a fling with a soldier. Frédéri is heartbroken.
His whole entourage tries to cheer him up. Little do they know that he will commit suicide after all.
