In Nepal the Koirala Family (Nepali: कोईराला बंश) refers to a family which has dominated Nepalese politics. Many of the family members have remained prominent figures in the Nepali Congress party since the country's first democratic movement. Four members, three of them brothers (Matrika Prasad Koirala, B. P. Koirala, Girija Prasad Koirala) plus one of their cousins, Sushil Koirala, have been Prime Minister of Nepal. However, many more members of the family with other political affiliations have also served in a senior capacity in various Nepali Governments over the years and continue to do so currently.. Still, many more members who do not have political aspirations have gone on to become prominent members in Nepali society making substantial personal contributions in the professions, the arts, academia, and the media.
