Kinepolis Group is a Belgian cinema chain which was formed in 1997 as a result of the merger of two family cinema groups and was listed on the stock exchange in 1998. Kinepolis Group has a chain of 46 cinemas spread across Belgium, France, Spain, Luxemburg, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Poland.
The first megaplex cinema in the world is considered to be Kinepolis Brussels located near the Atomium in Brussels, Belgium, which opened in 1988 with 25 screens.Kinepolis Madrid in Spain is the largest cinema in the world, with 24 screens and a seating capacity of 9,200.
Previously Kinepolis was owned and run by two families named Bert and Claeys. The latter have withdrawn from the company, leaving Joost Bert as co-CEO, together with Eddy Duquenne (equally co-CEO). This change was in effect from January 1, 2008.
