Kalgachia is a semi urban town of Barpeta district, Assam, India. It is 33 kilometres (21 mi) west of district headquarters Barpeta. Kalgachia is a Muslim (East Bengal rooted Muslim) based town. The census of India shows that 98% of the population in Kalgachia are Muslim. The total population is 29,000 where 17,000 are male and 12,000 are female.
The 3rd proposed Kalgachia sub division has been formally declared as Kalgachia civil Sub division of Barpeta district on 1 January 2016 as a new year gift by the Congress let govt. Chief minister Sri Tarun Gogoi for the greater Kalgachians. The Kalgachia civil Sub division committee had been formed in 1975 and since then the demand was raised to form Kalgachia as civil Sub division .Kalgachia is the center place of Jania LAC from where our late Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed became a President of India.The proposal was made by sub division committee in June, 2015 to form Kalgachia as civil Sub division.[]
It is not clear, when the village is established but a few official document says that the village was established 16th century .Here, it is available large number of Kolgos (Banana tree) so the name has become Kalgachia (place where banana trees are found).Popular stories refers to the existence of an Assamese Hindu dominated period in the region, which popularised the name 'Kalitapara'.Old kalgachia village divided of 1927.Now one part name of kalgachia and other part name of Dimapur.
