The name Kalamassery is derived from Kalabhasery. In Malayalam a word can have multiple meaning, in common usage kalabham means yellow sandalwood paste, and in literary Malayalam, it also means Elephant. Kalabhasery was the place where Elephants for Thrikkakara Temple was taken for rest after functions at the temple, that is a location near HMT, Kalamassery. During the course of time Kalabhasery became Kalamassery. Historically the prominent area was called Njalakam, place with a prominent Juma Masjid, but during the time of creation of Kalamassery Panchayat which include Njalakam, the decision was taken to choose the name as Kalamassery instead of Njalakam due to growth of Kalamassery due to the new industries like HMT in that area. Then later due to the growth Kalamassery was promoted to a Municipality status.
