Kalaivaanan (Tamil: கலைவாணன்) is a 1959 Tamil musical hit film directed by P. Pullaiah and starring A. Nageswara Rao and Anjali Devi in lead roles. The film is based on the 1947 production by V. Shantaram, titled Lokshahir Ram Joshi in Marathi and Matwala Shayar Ram Joshi in Hindi. The film simultaneously released in Telugu as Jayabheri.
The story is set around 1600-1700 during the Vijayanagara empire. Kasinatha Sastri (ANR) belongs to a high caste Brahmin family. He lives with his brother and sister-in-law, who is also his closest friend. He treats her like a mother. Manjulavani (Anjali Devi) is part of a troupe that perform plays for money. Being of different caste, the lovers find it difficult to be together with outside prejudices creeping in. The rest of the story is about how ANR marries Anjali, going against the norms and makes people realize that all humans are the same.
The music was composed by Pendyala Nageswara Rao. Lyrics were by Thanjai N. Ramaiah Dass, A. Maruthakasi, Amibapathi Kovai, Pattukkottai Kalyanasundaram & Pazhanichami. Singer is Raghunath Panigrahi. Playback singers T. M. Soundararajan, Ghantasala, Seerkazhi Govindarajan, M. Balamuralikrishna, Thiruchi Loganathan, P. B. Sreenivas, S. C. Krishnan, M. L. Vasanthakumari, Jikki, P. Suseela, S.
