Kai Sauer (3 March 1967, Hamburg, Germany) is a Finnish diplomat. He is the current Permanent Representative of Finland to the United Nations.
Sauer graduated in 1995 from the University of Tampere. He holds a Master’s Degree in Social Sciences. In 2014, Sauer was elected as the Alumni of the year to the Tampere University.
Sauer began his career at the Political Department of the Foreign Ministry of Finland in 1995 as a Desk Officer for Germany, Austria, Switzerland, United States and Canada.
In 1997, Sauer transferred to the Economic Department as a Desk Officer for Cooperation with Adjacent Areas. During 1998, he worked as a Desk Officer for Cultural Cooperation in the Department for Press and Culture.
From 1998 to 2000 Sauer served as a Deputy Head of Embassy of Finland in Zagreb, Croatia. During 2000-03 Sauer worked as a First Secretary in the Permanent Mission of Finland to the United Nations.
From 2003 to 2004 Sauer served as a Senior Adviser to the Special Representative of the Secretary General, Mr. Harri Holkeri in the UNMIK operation in Kosovo. During 2004-05 Sauer worked as the Head of the Strategic Analysis and Research Unit in UNMIK.
In 2005 Sauer was appointed as the Director of the Unit for the Western Balkans, in the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland.
Sauer spent the years 2005-07 as a Senior Adviser to the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General, former President of the Republic of Finland, Martti Ahtisaari in the UNOSEK operation in Vienna.
From 2007 until 2010 Sauer worked as a Director in the Unit for UN Affairs in the Ministry for Foreign Affairs.
In 2010 Sauer was appointed as the Ambassador of Finland to Indonesia, Timor-Leste and ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations).
In the fall of 2014, Sauer transferred to his current position as the Permanent Representative of Finland to the United Nations.
Sauer engages himself in ice hockey, diving and running. Sauer has run five marathons. In his youth, Sauer played on the youth national Ice Hockey team of Finland.
While as an Ambassador in Indonesia, Sauer founded a team with other Ambassadors and won the unofficial national league of Ice Hockey in Indonesia.
Sauer is married and has two children.
