Juan José 'Juanjo' Valencia de la Serna (born 18 September 1971 in San Sebastián, Basque Country) is a Spanish retired footballer who played as a goalkeeper.
Valencia began his career at the productive youth club Antiguoko in his hometown before being signed by Athletic Bilbao in 1990. After a year in the youth system at Lezama, he was initially loaned to third-tier Barakaldo CF but was quickly recalled to play for the reserve team Bilbao Athletic, helping them retain their place in the Segunda División.
He made an immediate impact at the age of 20 after becoming part of the Athletic first team squad to replace the departing Patxi Iru. When rival Kike Burgos was injured in pre-season, manager Jupp Heynckes gave him a first start against Cádiz in the opening game of 1992-93 (Julen Guerrero made his debut in the same game). He was ever-present in his first season despite his inexperience and established himself as the club's first choice, missing only eight league games in four seasons, until 1996-97 when he began to be challenged by Imanol Etxeberria. He fell out of favour under Luis Fernández and was only a back-up to Etxeberria in the next two campaigns (just one league appearance over those seasons), and then left at the age of 28 to join newly-promoted Sevilla in summer 1999, having made 195 appearances for Athletic in official competitions.
