Joshua Gates is an American television presenter, television producer and author. He was the host and co-executive producer of Destination Truth on Syfy, (formerly the Sci Fi Channel), a weekly series filmed in remote locations around the world that explores some of the world's mysteries and unexplained phenomena. Gates was born in Manchester-by-the-Sea, Massachusetts and currently resides in Los Angeles, California. Gates is currently the host of the television series Expedition Unknown on Travel Channel.
In addition to being a qualified SCUBA diver, Gates has also summited Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa and climbed Mt. Aconcagua in the Argentine Andes. From 1996 to 1998, Gates participated in the University of Maryland's archaeological excavations of Caesarea Maritima in Israel. Part of a small SCUBA team, Gates worked with researchers to excavate and better understand the ancient city's submerged harbor complex. In addition to his field work, Gates has traveled to 97 countries (as of “Hunting Vampires,” Expedition Unknown, broadcast 28 October 2015) around the world and was recently inducted into The Explorers Club, an organization dedicated to the advancement of exploration since 1904.
Gates is currently the host and executive producer of Expedition Unknown on Travel Channel, which premiered on January 8, 2015. The program follows Gates around the world as he explores the world's most enduring legends and mysteries. Expedition Unknown was renewed for a second season by Travel Channel, which premiered October 7, 2015. The series currently airs Wednesdays at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT in the United States. On March 24, 2016 The Travel Channel renewed the series for a third season, to air later this year.
