Joseph Cooney (born 28 March 1991) is an Irish hurler who currently plays as a centre-forward for the Galway senior team.
Born in Ballinasloe, County Galway, Cooney was born into a strong hurling family. His father, Joe, and his uncle, Jimmy, both played with Galway and won All-Ireland medals with the Galway team of the 1980s.
Cooney played competitive hurling during his secondary schooling at St. Brigid's Vocational School in Loughrea. Here he won an All-Ireland medal as captain of the team in 2009. Cooney first appeared for the Sarsfields club at underage levels, before progressing onto the senior team in 2008. He captained the team to a county senior championship in 2015.
Cooney made his debut on the inter-county scene at the age of eighteen when he was selected for the Galway minor team. He enjoyed one championship season with the minor team, culminating with the winning of an All-Ireland medal. He subsequently joined the Galway under-21 team, however, he was an All-Ireland runner-up in 2010. Cooney joined the Galway senior team during the 2012 championship. Since then he has won one Leinster medal and one National Hurling League medal. Cooney's father, Joe, was a double All-Ireland senior medalist with Galway.
