Jonathan Lawrence


Jonathan Lawrence (October 4, 1737 Newtown, Queens County, New York – September 4, 1812 New York City) was an American merchant and politician from New York.

He was the eighth son of John Lawrence (1695–1765) and Patience (Sacket) Lawrence. On March 16, 1766, he married Judith Fish (1749–1767), and they had a son. He then married Ruth Riker, and they had 9 children, among them congressmen Samuel Lawrence (1773–1837) and William T. Lawrence (1788–1859), and State Senator John L. Lawrence (1785–1849).

Jonathan Lawrence was a member of the 1st, 3rd and 4th New York Provincial Congresses, of the New York State Senate (Southern D.) from 1777 to 1783, and of the Council of Appointment in 1778-79 and 1782-83.

Assemblyman Daniel Lawrence was his brother. Attorney General Nathaniel Lawrence was his nephew. Congressman James Lent and Recorder Richard Riker were his great-nephews.
