Joel Derouin is a Canadian violinist, concert master, composer and music director. In addition to having worked with many popular musicians, he is also known for his work in film, television and theatre.
Born in Cornwall, Ontario, Canada on July 29, 1956, Joel Derouin began violin lessons at the age of five and soon became one of the first members of the Riverdale String Ensemble under accomplished Canadian violinist Rosemonde Laberge, travelling to and winning music festivals across Canada. He went on to study in Montreal at Le Conservatoire de Musique du Quebec from 1970 to 1975 and at The Juilliard School in New York City from 1975 to 1979. In 1977, when he was 21 years old, he was invited to tour with Emerson, Lake and Palmer on their Works tour. Since then, he has toured with Eric Clapton, Sheryl Crow, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Nicks, Barbra Streisand and in 2012 with Canadian rock band Rush during their Clockwork Angels tour. Since the early 1980s, Joel Derouin has worked with some of the biggest names in music, including Dido, M83, Michael Bublé, Ben Harper, Aretha Franklin, Michael Bolton, Paul Anka, Leonard Cohen, The Black Eyed Peas, Nelly Furtado, Mariah Carey, Barbra Streisand, Mary J. Blige, Sheryl Crow, Avril Lavigne, Dixie Chicks, Beck, The Mars Volta, Carrie Underwood, Liz Phair, Paul McCartney, LeAnn Rimes, Aimee Mann, Kelly Clarkson, Vanessa Carlton, Barenaked Ladies, Shakira, Rufus Wainwright, Christina Aguilera, Ricky Martin, Hanson and many others. He has provided music for many popular animated movies and television shows, including Disney and Pixar's Cars and Up; Disney's Planes; Fox's The Simpsons, American Dad! and Family Guy; and the classic Warner Bros. cartoons. His other film credits include acting as concert master for Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, Ted, Eragon and Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events; and playing violin on dozens of motion picture soundtracks, most recently for the films Epic, Oblivion, Men in Black 3 and Watchmen.
