Jeremy Burge (born 14 July 1984) is the Australian founder of Emojipedia and creator of World Emoji Day. He is responsible for all descriptions, blog posts, and other content on Emojipedia.
Burge is a member of the Unicode Emoji Subcommittee and cited as an emoji expert. In 2016 La Vanguardia referred to Burge as "The Lord of Emojis" and Business Insider listed him in the UK Tech 100.
In July 2013, Burge started the emoji reference site Emojipedia which now has over 180 million pageviews each year. In April 2016 Burge told BBC Mundo that editing Emojipedia has "become his full-time job".
Described as a leading authority on emoji use, Burge urged Apple to rethink its plan to convert the handgun emoji symbol into a water pistol icon in 2016, citing cross-platform confusion.
Emoji flags for England, Scotland and Wales were added to the Unicode Standard in 2017 after a formal proposal co-authored by Burge was approved.
Burge started the Emoji Wrap podcast in August 2016, and has interviewed notable guests such as Unicode Consortium President Mark Davis. In addition to hosting his own podcast, Burge has appeared on podcasts such as Tech News Today, Clockwise, The New Screensavers, Burnt Toast, Download This Show and It's Nice That.
The Evening Standard reported that Burge "lectured on the history and social impact of emojis" at TEDxEastEnd at London's Hackney Empire in 2017. In addition, Burge has spoken at conferences such as The Next Web in Amsterdam, and Úll in Killarney.
Panels that have hosted Burge include those at London Design Museum, Design Matters Copenhagen and Eye Magazine Type Tuesdays, with Alan Kitching and Rian Hughes.
