Jai Narain Vyas University (Hindi: जय नारायण व्यास विश्वविद्यालय), also known as University of Jodhpur, is in Jodhpur city in the Indian state of Rajasthan. Established in 1962 it took over the four colleges of Jodhpur run by the state government.First time in whole Rajasthan, JNVU received " A" grade ranking by NAAC in 2005 and maintained it for 5 years. Due to shortage of resources now JNVU is Accredited with "B" grade by the NAAC, this is the only residential university in the state of Rajasthan, catering mainly to the needs of students of western Rajasthan (the Marwar). Since this university is in the great Thar Desert, its R&D activities are centered on the heritage, society and challenges of the region. It is the western-most university of the country and imparts education and conducts research in border areas neighboring Pakistan.

The Jai Narain Vyas University (formerly known as University of Jodhpur), the second in the State of Rajasthan was established in 1962 by the Jodhpur University Act (Act XVII), enacted by the State Legislature, for the Unitary Teaching University. Dr S Radhakrihnan, the president of India inaugurated the University of Jodhpur on 24 August 1962. In his inaugural address the president revered Prof. Radha Krishnan desired and defined the goals and objective of the university:

"That the young people, who will be educated in this university, will go forward not as prisoners of the past, but as pilgrims of the future; will develop in them a spirit of dedication, a spirit of renunciation, a spirit of whole-hearted, single-minded concentration on the advancement of the knowledge, whether in science or humanities".

The university began to function in June 1962, when it took over the four colleges of Jodhpur run by the state government.

The first two were converted into the Faculties of Arts, Commerce, Law, Science and Social Sciences; the other two retain their entity and have been designated as the Kamla Nehru College for Women and the MBM Engineering College.

Shah G.L. Kabra Teacher's Training College also existed as private college at the time of foundation of the university. It is now one of the affiliated colleges of the University.

On February 12, 1992 the name of the institution was changed from Jodhpur University to Jai Narain Vyas University. It is a residential university and the colleges within the municipal limits of Jodhpur are affiliated to it. It received University Grants Commission (India) recognition as university on July 14, 1962.
