JOIDES Resolution (Joint Oceanographic Institutions for Deep Earth Sampling), often abbreviated JR, is one of two scientific drilling ships used by the International Ocean Discovery Program (the other being the Japanese drilling vessel Chikyu). The JR was previously the main research ship used in the Ocean Drilling Program and was used along with the Chikyu throughout the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program. She is the successor of Glomar Challenger.

The ship was launched as Sedco/BP 471, an oil exploration vessel. She was later converted for scientific use and began working for the ODP in January 1985.

JOIDES Resolution returned to active service in February 2009 following an extensive renovation of her laboratory facilities and crew quarters.

JOIDES Resolution is equipped with various research laboratories to allow the shipboard scientists to conduct research at sea as soon as the cores are recovered. The space includes facilities for visual core descriptions, microscopes for petrological and sediment analysis, instrumentation for measuring physical properties, and equipment for cutting and sectioning samples from rock and sediment cores. Other scientific infrastructure includes laboratories for paleomagnetism, geochemistry, microbiology, and paleontology. On-board analytical facilities includes X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, gas chromatographs, and spectrophotometry, among others.

In addition to the laboratories and technical resources, JOIDES Resolution contains a conference room, offices, cabins for members of the crew and science parties, a galley and mess hall. A gym, movie room, and lounge with a small library are provided for recreation of the crew and science teams.
