J.C. Patterson


James Colebrooke Patterson , also found as J.C. Patterson, (1839 - February 17, 1929) was a lawyer and a Canadian political figure.

Born in Armagh, Ireland in 1839, Patterson was educated in Dublin, Ireland and came to Canada in 1857. He was called to the bar of Ontario 1876 and practised in Windsor, Ontario.

Patterson served as the Reeve of Windsor for ten years. He was a Member of the Ontario Legislature from 1874 to 1878. He represented Essex in the Canadian House of Commons as a Conservative member from 1878 to 1895.

As Federal Minister of Militia and Defence, Patterson sought to strengthen the nation's permanent force and was responsible for the construction of fortifications at Esquimalt. He was Secretary of State in 1892 and served as Lieutenant-Governor of Manitoba (1895–1900)

Patterson sought to promote the growth of Canadian literature by founding the Canadian Magazine.

Patterson is commemorated by Paterson Street in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

J. C. Patterson Collegiate Institute in Windsor, Ontario was named after him.
