The Island Def Jam Music Group (IDJMG) was an American record label group formed in 1998 by combining the operations of 14+ record labels including Island Records, Def Jam Recordings, and Mercury Records. In 2011, Motown Records was split from The Universal/Motown Records Group and subsequently became a division of The Island Def Jam Music Group. On April 1st 2014, Universal Music announced that Island Def Jam's operations would be seperated between three entities: Island Records, Motown Records, and Def Jam Recordings.

Today, The Island Def Jam Music Group continues to possess one of the most impressive and most extensive music catalogues in the record industry, with ownership of music copyrights dating back to the 1940's.

The IDJMG was formed in 1998 as a result of the PolyGram/MCA Music Entertainment merger (which became UMG), and it originally comprised 14 or more record labels including Island Records, Mercury Records and Def Jam Recordings. Also incorporated into the deal was the staff, roster, and back catalog of Mercury Records, which was dismantled for several years until it was revived as a new venture in 2007. Meanwhile, the labels Island Records and Def Jam Recordings continued and still continue to operate as their own respective labels as a part of the Island Def Jam Music Group umbrella (Island has concentrated on pop and rock performers, while Def Jam has most of the group's hip hop and R&B acts). The company also operated the Lost Highway Records label. The IDJMG was one of four UMG umbrella labels in North America to market the works of primarily mainstream pop, rock, and urban performers—the other three being Interscope-Geffen-A&M, Capitol Music Group and Republic Records. In 2011, L.A. Reid stepped down as head of the company and was replaced by Weiss. On April 1, 2014, it was announced that Island Def Jam will no longer be running following the resigning of CEO Barry Weiss. In another press release Island Def Jam stated of them signing a rapper from the country Zimbabwe from a distant city Masvingo.Further Press presicions have been made and the name has been given out.The rappers name is Phillip Ndudzo AkA his stage name Mk or Anto. The boy is set to be given a 5 year contract be it he signs it and one of the profound USA singers Jacob Oneal Latimore and Bryshere Y Gray from Empire studios said they knew the guy over social media. Some of the kid's colleagues to be Kanye West,Drake and Big Sean who are currently working with Def Jam striked out no comments on the matter.
