Islampur is a Municipality and headquarters of Islampur subdivision in Uttar Dinajpur District in the Indian state of West Bengal.

As of 2011 India census, Islampur had a population of 308,518. Males constitute 51.54% of the population and females 48.48%. Islampur has an average literacy rate of 69% (less than the national average of 74.04%): male literacy is 59%, and female literacy is 40.99%. In Islampur, 18.7% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Islampur was ceded from Bihar (Purnea District) and merged with the then West Dinajpur District in 1956. After that, Islampur Subdivision disclosed its identity and tagged with West Dinajpur District. During the administrative bifurcation of West Dinajpur District on 1 April 1992, this subdivision was merged with Uttar Dinajpur District.

On 21 March 1959 the Islampur Subdivision was inaugurated by the Hon'ble Chief Minister Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy at the newly constructed administrative building of the S.D.O. Islampur, i.e., at the Subdivision Headquarters.

Practically, there were minimum urban facilities in Islampur at the time of declaration of subdivision headquarters. Islampur Town subsequently became an important centre for trade and commerce activities as a result there was an incremental growth in the demographic profile. This growth coupled with changing needs and aspirations of the people generated establishment of a municipality.
