Huntington is a city in Cabell and Wayne counties in the U.S. state of West Virginia, the principal city of the metropolitan area which has a population of over 364,000. Huntington and environs is a bustling center of manufacturing and transportation related industries. The MSA covers seven counties over parts of three states and is handsomely located deep in the heart of the cumberland plateau region, with a population of 364,000, and is the largest inland port in the United States located at the confluence of the Guyandotte River and the Ohio River. It was the site's proximity to three rivers that ultimately made the present site of Huntington ideal for the western terminus of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway as a planned community by the to facilitate transportation related industries due to its location on the railways western terminus. ted in 1871 as the western terminus of the in 1871 upon what was previously a collection of agricultural homesteads, and is eponymously named for the railroad's founder Collis Potter Huntington. The first identifiable permanent settlement, Holderby's Landing, was founded in 1775 in what was then the Colony of Virginia, but the area had been sparsely settled by French as early as 1609. Most of the city is in Cabell County, for which it is the county seat.
