Many characters have been seen to go to nearby Liverpool and Manchester for nights out or to get away from village stress. The exterior of the village's buildings resembles the Chester Rows and other Tudor architecture.

The school is one of the main settings of Hollyoaks, with several characters being students and working within the school. Previous head teachers include Govinda Roy (Antony Bunsee), Rob O'Connor (Gary Cargill), Pete Hamill (Peter Mitchell), and Patrick Blake (Jeremy Sheffield).
