The Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine is a graduate medical school at Hofstra University, in Hempstead, New York. It was founded with Northwell Health in 2008, and formally welcomed its inaugural class in 2011.
The School of Medicine offers the Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree, and other degrees or joint degree programs such as M.D./M.P.H., M.D./Ph.D. or Ph.D. in the Molecular Basis of Medicine, G.M.E., C.M.E. and B.S.-B.A./M.D. (Hofstra 4+4 Program).
In March 2015, following the success of the new medical school, the Hofstra University and Northwell Health System partnership announced the launched of the Hofstra Northwell School of Graduate Nursing and Physician Assistant Studies. The school offers Master of Science degrees as a family nurse practitioner or an adult-gerontology acute care nurse practitioner. Hofstra's existing dual-degree Physician Assistant Studies will also be housed in the new school. Hofstra's health care network additionally includes their School of Health Sciences and Human Services.
On Tuesday, October 16, 2007, Hofstra University and North Shore-LIJ Health System (now known as the Northwell Health system) announced plans to establish a new school of medicine, and on March 26, 2008, signed the Joint Academic Agreement that established the school. On Tuesday, June 8, 2010 the school had been approved by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), the accrediting agency, allowing it to begin reviewing applications as early as July 1. While not the first medical school in Nassau County (that distinction is held by the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine, the medical college of the New York Institute of Technology), it is the first to grant the Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree. It's also New York State's first new M.D. medical school since 1963, according to Dr. Lawrence G. Smith, the new school’s dean.
